Dr. Betta Edu, whose full name is Dr. Betta Edu Ekpenyong, is a Nigerian medical doctor, public health advocate, and politician.
She was born on May 29, 1980, in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. Dr. Betta Edu has made significant contributions in the field of public health and has held several leadership positions in government and health organizations.
Dr. Betta Edu obtained her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of Calabar in 2004. She later pursued a Master's degree in Public Health at the University of Calabar, specializing in Health Systems Management.
She also holds a certificate in Global Health and Policy from the University of London.
After completing her medical education, Dr. Betta Edu worked as a medical officer at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and gained experience in various medical departments.
However, her passion for public health led her to focus on community health and development. She worked with several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) to implement health programs and promote healthcare access in rural areas.
In 2015, Dr. Betta Edu was appointed as the Director-General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (CRSPHCDA) by the Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade.
In this role, she was responsible for the development and implementation of primary healthcare policies, programs, and initiatives in the state.
Under her leadership, the CRSPHCDA achieved significant improvements in healthcare delivery, maternal and child health, immunization coverage, and disease control.
Dr. Betta Edu's efforts in public health have earned her recognition and accolades both nationally and internationally.
She has been honored with awards such as the African Public Health Heroine Award, the Most Outstanding First Lady in Nigeria Award, and the Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna Platinum Leadership Award.
In addition to her work in public health, Dr. Betta Edu is also involved in politics. She has been an active member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has held positions within the party.
In recognition of her dedication and contributions to the party, she was appointed as the Commissioner for Health in Cross River State in 2019.
As a Commissioner for Health, Dr. Betta Edu has continued to prioritize healthcare development and has implemented various programs to improve healthcare service delivery in the state.
She has been instrumental in the establishment of new healthcare facilities, the recruitment of additional healthcare workers, and the promotion of health policies and initiatives.
